The Atkins
Pros:
Easy diet to follow because the foods which are allowed are well
defined and readily available. Mostly meats, cheese
and other such things that are usually high in fat (which many people love to eat). Easy to modify
when going out to eat, and rarely leaves the dieter hungry.
Cons:
Most foods are high in choloestorol and can make dieters feel tired
and sluggish. Many people report that on starting this diet they
dont feel the spunk and energy they did when following other diets
which are well balanced including all food groups. Some people may
find this diet is not for them due to these facts alone in which
case a better suited diet should be considered. Also many people
find it hard to kick the sugar habit, but in essence that is the
point of the diet.
Cost:
This diet can be pretty cheap considering it is not that expensive
to grab a hamburger hold the bread on the go. Also, many resturants
offer the atkins version of some dishes on the menu. There is not
much expensive shopping to do for things like costly protein shake
mixes or speciality foods.
Ease:
Not many diets easier on the market than the atkins. Pretty much
you just eliminate the carbs and sugars and you are good to go.
You can generally have as much of the reccomended foods as you want,
and all of the foods are not hard to come by.
Results:
Many many people have had signifigant results using the atkins diet.
This diet is by far the most used and most contriversial diet the
industry has seen in a long time, although it has been around for
a while now. Peole seem to lose weight at an extreamly quick pace
in the beginning while the results usually taper off after the first
6 months or so.

The principle behind the Atkins diet
is something called Ketosis. Ketosis is a state of body which
when reached means excess, stored body fat is burned, resulting
in weight loss. In simpler terms when you reach a state of ketosis,
you are burning stored fat instead of sugars in exchange for energy.
Generally the body will reach for sugars when trying to gain energy
thus burning the diet advocatesa low carbohydrate solution to
your eating habits instead of restricting consumption of fat or
calories,which results in additional glucose or sugars not being
added to the body’s metabolism. Dr. Atkins believes regular
insulin production converts excess carbohydrates into body fat.
Calories the body requires can be burned through benign dietary
ketosis, or the burning of stored fat, rather than from carbohydrates
consumed.
Individuals who subscribe to the Atkins diet must be aware of their carbohydrate
intake for at least two weeks while consuming high-protein meals
and snacks. The level of carbohydrate conducive
to weight loss can easily be measured this way. According to Dr. Atkins, the carbohydrate ceiling
for weight loss may be as high as 60 carbohydrate grams per day,
or as low as 15, depending on the person. After following
Atkins's program, weight is maintained rather than lost, requiring
more restricted carbohydrate consumption to lose weight.
Before following the Atkins diet, or any other diets, you should
consult with your doctor. The Atkins diet does not work for
everyone, obviously not for vegetarians for example, but many
people have shown some success. If the Atkins diet does not
sound like something that you could do then you should by all
means find something more suitable to your needs. There are many
other ways to lose weight. With proper research, eating healthy,
and daily exercise, you are sure to lose some weight while teaching
yourself proper lifestyle tips that help you maintain your goals.
